Bo Burnham’s 2018 film Eighth Grade has won the “Best First-Time Feature” award at the 71st Director’s Guild of America Awards.
Eighth Grade, a coming-of-age story about a 13-year-old girl getting through her final week of the eighth grade, is not a newbie to film accolades. According to IMDB, the comedy-drama has racked up a total of 44 wins and 69 nominations so far.
For instance, Eighth Grade won the Sundance London “Audience Favorite” just last summer. Elsie Fisher, who plays main character Kayla Day, was also a recent Golden Globe nominee for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy”.
Burnham was able to beat out both Matthew Heineman (A Private War) and Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), in which the latter of the two was highly expected to win. As well as being nominated for the “Best First-Time Feature”, Cooper was also nominated for the “Outstanding Directorial Achievement” award. At the end of the day, though, the award for “Best Feature Film” went to Alfonso Cuaron for Roma.
Nonetheless, with a prestigious DGA Award under his belt, Burnham will next be traveling to Scotland for the Glasgow Film Festival later this month––plenty of time to spare before Eighth Grade‘s UK release in April.
