DeMarre Carroll started playing basketball in 2009. He started playing basketball professionally after being selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2009 NBA draft. During his rookie season, he was assigned multiple times to the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Development League.
On 24 February 2011, he was traded to the Houston Rockets but he was soon released from the team on 11 April 2011. He joined the Denver Nuggets training camp on 12 December 2011, but he was released from the Nuggets on 4 February 2012 after appearing in just four games.
On 8 February 2012, he signed with the Utah Jazz but he was soon released from the team making him a free agent again. On 3 August 2013, he signed with Atlanta Hawks and set his career-high of 26 points in a winning match against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Later, on 9 July 2015, Carroll signed a four-year contract worth $60 million with the Toronto Raptors. He recorded 14 points in his debut match against Indiana Pacers. DeMarre was forced to miss several matches due to his right knee injury. On July 13, 2017, Carroll was traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
