Ronnie Maceo, a renowned island shop owner and restaurateur, died Sunday afternoon after being hospitalized for almost a month from injuries suffered in a car crash, his family said on social media. He was 75.
Maceo was a member of one of the island’s most notable and colorful families, which was responsible for founding the famous Balinese Room.
He’s locally famous in his own right for operating Maceo’s Spice & Import Co. for decades, most recently at 2706 Market St.
Maceo and Cruz Cortez, owner of Cruz Cortez Clothiers, were at the intersection of 27th Street and Broadway on Oct. 17 when a vehicle broadsided Maceo’s Jeep, causing it to roll, Concetta Maceo-Sims, his daughter, said at the time.
Cortez suffered minor injuries and the other driver was uninjured, but Maceo suffered neck and back injuries, including broken vertebrae, Maceo-Sims said.
He had been in a hospital intensive care unit since the crash, according to the family.
